Berliner Brot
These are the *best* chocolate cookies in the world! I've always only
had them at Christmas, when we usually pull out all the stops anyhow.
There is so much chocolate in this recipe that no shortening is
required...the cocoa butter in the chocolate provides enough fat.
Here's my Grossmama's recipe for Berliner Brot:
3 eggs 1/2 pound unsweetened chocolate
1 pound brown sugar 1/2 pound cut nut meats
1 t cinnamon l large cup sifted flour
1/4 t cloves
Melt chocolate. Beat eggs 'til foamy. Add sugar, spices, nuts and
flour. Then add melted chocolate. Drop from spoon onto a well
greased pan and bake at 300 degrees for 15 minutes.
You can also spread the batter about 1/2 inch thick in a jelly-roll
pan. My grossmama baked her's this way, but since she used a wood
stove, she gave no oven temperature (moderate) or baking time in her
recipe.
Merry Christmas, everyone!
