My all-time favorite sugar cookie (roll and cut) recipe follows.

3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter (soft) use real butter for a rich
cookie
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg lightly beaten
2 tablespoons cream or milk
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Sift flour, baking powder and salt together, set aside. Cream butter.
Gradually add sugar, creaming well. Stir in egg, milk and vanilla. Add
dry ingredients gradually; mix well. Chill if necessary for easier
handling. Roll out the dough 1/3 at a time on a floured surface to about
1/8 inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place on
ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 400° for 5-8 minutes until delicately
browned. Decorate as you like.
