A few weeks ago, I mentioned the "egg dolls" and
"egg baskets" that are part of my family's Easter
traditions. MS GRACE E DEASY said they were part
of her family tradition too, and she called the
dolls "puppa con ova". Well, here's the recipe!
EGG DOLLS AND BASKETS
=====================
6 hard-boiled eggs
For dough:
4 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs, beaten
4 tablespoons melted shortening
warm milk (about 1 cup)
For glaze:
1 egg, beaten with a little water
Mix ingredients in a bowl and add enough warm milk
to make a dough. Not too sticky. If you need to add
flour, either to the dough, or to flour your working
surface, be sure to use 1 teaspoon of baking powder
for every cup of flour.
On two greased cookie sheets, shape the dough into 6 flat
doll and/or basket shapes. Top each shape with an egg.
Be sure to reserve some dough for decoration (doll eyes
and noses), and for criss-crosses to secure the eggs
to the shapes. Use toothpicks to hold together.
Leave plenty of room between shapes.
Beat another egg with a little water and use it to
brush each doll and basket.
Bake at 375 deg/F for 1/2 hour until lightly brown.

Hope you enjoy!
