Margarita Madness

What drink with Mexican roots takes on innumerable forms yet is almost always instantly recognizable?

a.jpg (1522 bytes) The Margarita!

The margarita was born a cocktail in Mexico and spread to the United States through California sometime before 1960.  It seems obvious that the name honors a woman.  The unanswered question is which woman.  More than one woman has claimed the honor, but none have been able to prove their namesake.  In fact, we don't even know exactly when the margarita came to be.

What we do know is that no matter what your tastes, there's a margarita for you.   Starting with a basic margarita recipe, you can create fruity, potent, sweet, elegant, powerful or downright lethal concoctions.

Basic Easy Margarita

1 salted margarita glass
1 lime wedge
2 ounces tequila
1/2 ounce triple sec
1 1/2 ounces sour mix
  1. Mix liquids
  2. Pour into glass filled halfway with ice
  3. Garnish with lime

Now for the variety show.  A regular margarita can  be turned into a desert  simply by tossing the whole thing into a blender.  You can chop the ice just a bit for a sno-cone cold treat (flash blend movie) or  let it whir round until you have a slushy.  They don't sell these at Dairy Queen!

If the basic margarita is a little tart for you, consider a fruit based margarita.  You can substitute almost any fruit  (freshly smashed is best) for the sour mix or simply add your favorite fruit to the blender with the basics.  When creating a fruit margarita, you want to  line your glass with sugar instead of the standard kosher salt. The most common margarita fruit is the strawberry.  However, the adventure doesn't stop there!  In a full week of Mexican cantinas--I don't think I had the same margarita twice.  The best by far was the mango margarita.  You can also experiment with berries, citrus, and melons.  To take things a step further, add a fruit flavored liqueur to your new drink.

From drinks that claim to be the best in the galaxy, to those that claim to cure your ills, you can find your favorite margarita recipe online.  Below are a few that you may have missed.
