Low Fat Mexican
With the New Year often comes the resolution to lose
weight.
We remember the holiday food...
and promise to eat like a rabbit until those extra pounds are gone.
Wouldn't it be great to eat your favorite dishes and not worry about
fat? Believe it or not, Mexican food can be healthy. Spices are prevalent,
negating the need for lots of butter and other fats. Mexican food is also full of
vegetable dishes, or dishes that can easily cut red meat consumption. Incorporate the
following ideas into your diet to help keep the pounds off and the flavor alive!
Eating a meat dish? Cut the meat in half and add extra
veggies.
Eat soup. The extra water
makes you feel fuller, causing you to eat less.
Use salsa as a condiment.
Salsa is better for you than most condiments and adds flavor to almost any dish.
Try it on baked potatoes!
Use caution
and common sense in eating out. Many Mexican dishes contain lard and lots of
fatty meat.
Use chiles in your recipes. The
added spice will slow and limit your consumption.
Make your own refried beans. Most
recipes call for lard and meat products. You can make your own with neither and have
a much healthier dish.
When weather permits--GRILL!
Fat falls into the coals and the taste can't be beat.
When weather does not permit grilling, broil.
Substitute fruit
for high fat desserts.
If you must eat tortilla chips--choose baked ones.
Try these Mexican recipes from around the Internet to start your new
year right!
