     1/2            cup  cornmeal
     1/2            cup  all-purpose flour
     1/2            cup  buttermilk
     1/2      teaspoon  salt
     1/2      teaspoon  baking powder
     1/4      teaspoon  baking soda
  1                      egg -- beaten
  1               small   onion -- minced
                        Peanut oil for deep frying

Heat oil in a deep fryer to 365 degrees. In a large bowl combine all
ingredients, except oil, and mix until well combined. When oil is hot drop
batter, by tablespoons, into hot oil. Fry until browned on one side and
floating, turn and fry on second side. Remove and drain on paper towel.

Yield: 1 1/2 dozen
